Security Camera Placement Guide for Home Monitoring
Where you place your camera matters as much as the camera itself. A $0 browser-based camera positioned well will outperform an expensive dedicated camera placed poorly. This guide covers the principles of effective camera placement for home security monitoring.
Fundamental Principles
Good camera placement follows three rules:
- Cover entry points first — doors and windows are where intruders enter. Prioritize these over open spaces.
- Minimize blind spots — every camera has a field of view. Position it so the most critical area is centered, not at the edge.
- Consider the lighting — cameras perform differently in various lighting conditions. Position matters for detection accuracy.
Optimal Placement Locations
Front Door
The most important location. Position the camera to capture anyone approaching the door, ideally at a slight downward angle (about 30-45 degrees from horizontal). This angle captures faces clearly while minimizing the chance of the camera being easily knocked or redirected. Place it at roughly head height (5-6 feet) for the best face recognition angle.
Back Door / Side Entrance
Secondary entrances are common entry points for intruders who want to avoid front-door visibility. The same principles apply: face-height mounting, slight downward angle, centered on the doorway.
Living Room / Common Area
If your primary concern is monitoring activity inside the home, position the camera to cover the main living space from a corner. Corner placement provides the widest field of view and minimizes blind spots behind furniture.
Stairway / Hallway
A camera at the top or bottom of a stairway captures all vertical movement. This is particularly useful in multi-story homes where intruders may move between floors.
Garage / Workshop
Position the camera facing the garage door from inside, or cover the workbench area where valuables may be stored. Ensure the camera has adequate lighting — garages are often dimly lit.
Height and Angle Considerations
Mounting height affects both field of view and detection accuracy. Too high (above 7 feet) and the camera captures mostly tops of heads, making face identification difficult. Too low (below 3 feet) and the camera is vulnerable to tampering and captures an unflattering, less useful angle.
The sweet spot for most home cameras is 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 meters) — roughly eye level for an average adult. This height provides clear face capture, a natural viewing angle, and is high enough to be out of easy reach.
Tilt angle should be approximately 30-45 degrees downward from horizontal. This ensures the camera captures both the entry area and the person's face, rather than pointing straight ahead and missing anyone close to the wall.
Lighting Considerations

Common Placement Mistakes
- Pointing directly at a window — the brightness difference between indoor and outdoor light overwhelms the camera sensor, making the interior too dark to detect anything
- Placing too close to the subject — a camera 2 feet from a doorway captures a very narrow field of view. Pull back to 6-10 feet for better coverage
- Ignoring power access — a camera with a dead battery is useless. Always position near a power source for continuous monitoring
- Placing on unstable surfaces — a phone propped against a glass can easily fall. Use a stand, mount, or stable surface
- Overlooking Wi-Fi range — the initial page load and optional Telegram alerts require internet. Ensure the device has adequate Wi-Fi signal
Testing Your Placement
Before committing to a position, test it. Walk through the area you want to monitor while watching the live feed on a second device. Check for:
- Coverage — is the entire target area visible? Walk to the edges of the room.
- Face clarity — walk toward and away from the camera. Can you identify yourself in the feed?
- Detection accuracy — with person detection enabled, walk at different speeds and angles. Does the bounding box track reliably?
- Lighting — check the feed at different times of day. Does the camera adjust adequately?
